So many people got sick in the office these days and our tea lady brought in a big jar of nice and juicy salty kumquats. A good remedy for sore throat, the idea of adding honey and hot water to make a hot kumquat drink already sounds so comforting! 咸柑橘s were something I attempted to make but failed - the kumquats I made were sitting in the salt forever without a tiny bit of juice coming out!

I was told the key is actually to boil the kumquats for like a minute or two before storing in the jar. After some more online searching, below are a few easy steps to make salty kumquats - which shouldn't go wrong I believe:

1) Wash the kumquats (hmmm...ok)
2) Cook the kumquats in boiling water for 1-2 min (VERY important! This is to ensure the kumquats would release the juice afterwards)
3) Dry the kumquats fully
4) Store the kumquats in a jar with salt. No need a whole lot of salt as long as every single kumquat gets a bit of it.
5) Close the lid. Keep it for years or until the brownish juice comes out.

Love the shaved ice; love the pineapple cakes; love the tea houses on every corner of the streets; love the 4-level Starbucks; love Eslite; love the low density houses (reminds me of Dai Hung's house in Doraemon)...

Love the "hea-ness" of Taiwan. I don't mind living there for a month or something - doing nothing but to chill at cafes and Eslite (O well...my foot tie's desire).

Thank you my sweetest friend for bringing me to this great restaurant. The pineapple cakes and cheese green tea are also the best that I have ever had! O...I would def. spend sometime to listen to your strongly recommended albums!

2 weeks since I got back. Amazingly:

1) I read less magazines or newspaper - whether online or the actual newspaper (not even my favorite entertainment sections)
2) I rarely listen to my favorite radio station 903 which I used to do that almost everyday when I was in the US. My radio/stereo plays all the stations crisply EXCEPT the channel 903!
3) I didn't buy any clothes other than 1 pair of pants and 1 top.
4) Eat less because of the weird time schedule of my classes.
5) Talk less (Don't worry. What I mean by "less" may still be quite alot to some others).

Don't know why I find myself quite busy ever since I came back and seldom have time to just sit down - to relax, to think, or to update myself with what's going on around me.

Last night I finally had time before I slept to lie on my bed with the AC on and watch some TV...the feeling was just so good!

My first day of class was good.

I made some new friends and bought a HKD$15 tea set from the school's canteen that includes a huge soy sauce drumstick, cafe de coral style potato salad and ice lemon tea!

Feeling good to become a student again...can slow down a bit and just learn.

There are sooooooooooooo many students from Mainland. My program admitted 40% of students from Mainland this year but by what I observed in class yesterday, there were over 75% of students who spoke Mandarin! Nice and fun fellows!

To a certain extend I feel like I am a minority in class :P

Music and Lyrics (by Huge Grant and Drew Berrymore) is a typical chick flick which is not always my cup of tea. But what I like about this movie is that it really arouses the 80's spirit deep down in me. I was born in the 80's, grew up in the 80's...from the very moment I started to know and understand what was going on in the world around me, I have been immersed by the 80's culture. And "my 80's" was brought to me mainly by my sister.

In the 80's when my sister was at her teenage and probably the most rebellious and wanting-to-become an adult stage, she had always been a trendy figure to me: 2 inches shoulder-padded jacket, leg warmers (even though they all come back now!), fingerless gloves and most importantly, the hairstyle with frizzy hair at the back but the bang was moussed to style like an arch. These are classic!

My 80's music influence was pretty westernizd. Thanks to my sister who used to record the English pop songs (she was so into American culture at that time) from MTV on a tape and kepe playing all day long. All these names such as Tiffany, Debbie Gibson, Pet Shop Boys, Jason Donovan and Kylie Minogue wouldn't sound unfamiliar to me. As I child who was probably 7 or 8 at that time, I could already hum the tune of the melodies and sing a few chrous lyrics. Scary enough, I think I may still remember how does Debbie Gibson look like (of course not Debbie Gibson now but Debbie Gibson back then)! So when they talk about Tiffany and Debbie Gibson in the movie, I felt real proud that I know them!

Now that I am in my late 20s, one of my all time favorite songs is still Cyndi Lauper's True Color. And the song Eternity would pop up in my head from time to time (my sister used to listen to Eternity 20 times in a row on her tape recorder).

Forgot the mention, I like the theme song "Pop! Goes my heart" from Music and Lyrics quite a bit. The "music video" cracks me up!

Such a coincidence that we were flipping through the book Wall and Piece at Urbanoutfitters.com by this graffiti artist Banksy the day before. They share one similarity to me - they are both "naughty". Maybe naughtiess is one of the biggest qualities a graffiti artist must have in him.

Coffee Walnut cookies

The recipe definitely still has room for improvements. My goal is to make cookies taste a little bit more like my favorite 車厘哥夫's. Wakakakaaaa...

Ingredient:
Butter (room temperature) - 160g
Brown sugar - 120g - 130g
Vanilla essense - 1 tsp
Egg yolk - 1
All purpose flour - 220g
Baking power - 0.5 tsp
Instant coffee - 2.5 tbsp
Hot water - 2 - 2.5 tbsp
Chopped walnut - 40g

1) Preheat oven to 350F.
2) Stir instant coffee with hot water.
3) Beat butter, sugar and vanilla essense until cream like.
4) Add coffee and egg yolk. Beat well.
5) Sift in flour and baking powder. Mix well.
6) Add walnuts.
7) Roll the cookie dough. Cover with plastic wrap. Store in the fridge for 1 hr.
8) Cup the dough into pieces (approx. 0.5cm thick).
9) Bake for 15-20 min.

The latest issue (July) of MONEY magazine has a pretty 無聊 but funny article - How to Marry a Billionaire.

Below are some of the "tips" mentioned in the article on how to meet and eventually marry a billionaire:

- Get an M.B.A asap
- Land the right job that allows you to circulate among the wealthy
- Show off your brain
- Move close to where the billionaires live - "If you want to be rich, you must live where the rich live, even if it's in an attic."
- Go to the galleries and museums. Pay couple hundreds to thousands to join the memberships. Do your homework and be knowledgeable in different art movements.
- Dress appropriately; invest in a Kelly Bag by Hermes.
- Be friends with the personal trainers - since they know who's available
- Be active in those charitable events.

OK. Looks like marrying a billionaire is a long and winding road. My friend was joking, it may even be easier to train your boyfriend to become a billionaire.

I am just thinking, once you have earned your M.B.A, landed a job at a prestige company; and you have brain as well as physical qualities...you should be very well-off already. 無敵 ga la bor!? Maybe by the time you have achieved all of the above, you won't have the same mentality to marry a billionaire anymore.

Red Bean Mochi - a great potluck idea

The red bean mochi turns out really well this time - thanks for the recipe from my ex co-worker's wife:

Ingredient:
Rice flour - 1 pound (I used 1 box of the Japanese brand Mochiko)
Whole milk - 1 2/3 cup
Eggs - 3
Unsalted butter - 1/2 cup
Sugar - 1/2 cup
Baking powder - 1/2 teaspoon
Vanilla extract - a few drops
Red bean paste (with whole red beans) - 1 cup (I bought those Japanese red bean paste in a can...2 small cans)

Instruction:
1) Preheat oven to 320F.
2) Mix all the ingredient together (better to use a hand mixer).
3) Pour the batter into a non-stick baking pan (remember to SPRAY the pan with PAM).
4) Bake for 1 hr or until the top turns golden brown.

Next time I want to try making different kinds of mochi...green tea red bean mochi sounds yummy, but still have no idea how to make it work.

But in reality, this lady in China really does make a living with her own feet! She was born without arms - and her feet ARE her hands.

年少無知, 從前祇知他是《輪流傳》個導演和他曾經跟鄭裕玲拍拖N年...

食住進念《The Life and Times of Louis I. Kahn》個勢, he (or Samsung) launched the site "Masterminds" - the idea behind basically is saying that, if we have creativities, everyone can become a "馬思特" (master). He interviewed all these well-known people from different fields (mainly artists, directors, writers, designer etc. etc.) and shared their successful stories. I haven't fully explored the website yet but it looks kind of interesting to me.

Guess this is another good example of multimedia advertising.

我看電影配樂

To me, 電影配樂 is like a necklace - very often being neglected but if you can find the *right* piece that goes with your outfit, it indeed can add tremendous to your whole look (what an analogy but I think it's quite true). That's why I love buying soundtracks (and necklaces too). A good film score has the magic to make you remember the scenes in a movie; same way, a good movie can make it's music/songs 百聽不厭. My all time favorite movie soundtracks are: Virgin's Suicide and Marie Antoinette.

Hong Kong movies generally are lacking some good 電影配樂. After all these years the very songs I remember from movies are probably only Leslie Cheung's "追" from《金枝玉葉》and the Shaolin Kung Fu version "California Dreaming" in "Shaolin Soccer". Oh, maybe also McDull's songs too!

HK TV dramas don't pay much attention to their music neither. 壹號皇廷 12345 were quite a breakthrough at their times because of their use of all these English songs in the background as well as an opening music without any lyrics. After the episodes came out, these songs became quite a hit - at least among HK people. However, it's also very easy for them to "abuse" these songs by overly repeating them throughout the scenes. 《溏心風暴》is a good example. If you have seen that you will know what I mean - I actually got quite annoyed by it.

In comparison, Japanese movies and dramas always do a good job with their 配樂. "Long Vacation", "Beach Boys", "Over Time", to name a few, all have very nice music. They are well thought and nicely arranged and can only make the scenes evoke more emotions from the viewers. Almost every time after I have seen a Jap movie or drama, it makes me want to get its soundtrack right away.

I just watched《太陽之歌》today. Similar to《NANA》, the leading roles actually sing the songs in the movies. I love the music in both movies. Without these songs, I don't think there will be as many 喊位 as they are now.

Got some tips from 2 Japanese friends on how to make the most authentic Japanese curry - something the instructions on the curry block packages don't tell you...

Recipe 1: Curry blocks + V8 + a small piece of chocolate

Recipe 2: Curry blocks + ketchup + tonkatsu sauce

Experiment...

Tonight, I made the chicken curry with 1 can of V8 + ketchup + tonkatsu sauce. 好味 wor! Starting to taste like those at the Jap restaurants. I believe the essence is the tonkatsu sauce.

I guess I probably laughed too much and talked too much at work today...the not-fully-healed sockets (where my wisdom teeth were) feel kinda funny and they hurt a little too. I'm afriad the stitches may have been stretched or something. But thanks co-worker A for her hillarious Golden Gate Park ghost story and S for her classic HK TV commercials.

【明報專訊】土瓜灣聖母院書院一名中一女生，昨午飯時間在課室噴香水，坐在旁邊的3名女同學被波及，吸入香水後出現作悶作嘔等徵狀，校方將3人送院治理，其中1人要戴上氧氣面罩幫助呼吸，噴灑香水的女生則安然無恙。校方指違規暫不處罰

肇事地點為土瓜灣盛德街聖母院書院，該校校長陳君雅事後證實該校有女學生懷疑吸入香水導致不適，陳校長指出，肇事香水置於一個6吋長非透明玻璃樽內，但該校校規規定，所有學生均不准噴香水上學，肇事女生明顯已觸犯校規，但校方暫未考慮有關處罰問題。現場消息指出，該瓶香水為法國品牌。

昨午約1時15分，該校正值午膳時間，一名中一女生與另外3名女同學留在課室內，其間，女生取出香水噴灑，水霧波及3名同學，3同學吸入香水後，先後出現作悶作嘔症狀，惟獨肇事女生安然無恙，毋須送院。校方得悉後，電召救護車將3名女同學送院治理，其中1人呼吸困難，要戴上氧氣面罩幫助呼吸。

Today is the sixth day after my wisdom teeth surgery. The swelling does get little better but my cheeks started to bruise. Peeking at all these snacks in the office (on the table right behind me) but couldn't eat. aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa...when can I eat something more 實在 again?

One of our favorite "post-lunch" activities among our co-workers is to go to SFMOMA store to check out their books and accessories. I remember when we saw these velvet butterfly rings, our reaction was like, "ha? not worthy...just a piece of cloth". This issue of Milk Magazine features the designers of these butterfly rings - they are a team of two who based in UK.

Another example of turning something simple into....not just a biz but something you would be happy with.

A good reminder to myself: inspiration + creativity + enthusaism + dedication + diligence + ACTION = ...........................(whatever you can think of)

Time: Live like a 闊太的 Sunday afternoon

Place: A really nice India X Italian fusion restaurant (yes India cross over Italian...wonder how could that be) with great ambience. Looking out from the huge window, you see the sea/ocean and some nice little houses - just like those generic calendars showcasing the Greek Islands or some other Mediterranean areas

Flipping through the latest issue of COLOR magazine featuring China...滴汗...

These 3 gigantic Chinese gods of happiness, wealth and long life are actually the Tian Zi Hotel in Beijing!!?? I lOVE how it says in the magazine that when people first saw the hotel, their reaction was like "At first you are shocked. Then you laugh. Then you want to cry". Don't get me wrong, I would still give credit to the architect's guts and originality - it's really one of its kind!

BTW, 今期COLOR好好看.
